If you haven’t already, give this one a chance. Shravan Bharadwaj’s music and Vivek Kalepu’s cinematography add texture to the film. Senapathi might not always get every beat right but the film shines due to the technical department too. Harsha Vardhan also shines in the quirky role he gets and proceedings get interested once his character enters the fray. He’s clearly here to stay and pulls off the level-headed cop role with ease. Agastya manages to hold his own in a character that’s the complete opposite of his role in Mathu Vadalara. He is the perfect fit for the role and proves why he’s called ‘nata kireeti’. Rajendra Prasad truly steals the show as someone who is willing to go to lengths to get what he wants but still has a conscience enough to mourn his misdoings. The two actors also play off each other’s strengths and the minute beats of their characters.
Pavan also does a good job of showing the contrast between the two Krishnas. However, the film fares best when it sticks to the crime part of it because barring one particular scene featuring Rajendra Prasad and Agastya, the emotional scenes get a little too much as the film progresses. It’s not just Krishna and Murthy who are explored well, Paramjyothi (Harsha Vardhan), who’s brought in to clean up the mess, a journalist called Satya (Gnaneswati Kandregula), Murthy’s sidekicks Hussain (Rakendu Mouli), Raju (Josh Ravi) – all get their due, so do others. Senapathi is almost like a slow burn – what starts out as a run-of-the-mill crime drama soon makes time to delve deeper into characters and their motivations. He is the one who ends up with the missing revolver and what follows is a cat-and-mouse chase.
On the other end of the spectrum is Krishna Murthy (Rajendra Prasad), a much older man who has already been beaten by the system.
